the brand

Hermès is a French luxury brand founded in 1837 that is known for producing high-end, handcrafted leather goods, silk scarves, ready-to-wear, and accessories.

It was originally a saddle company and the horse is an important motif in their branding.

Their orange boxes are some of the most iconic packaging out there.

Hermès does not shy away from color. Their product photography feels like you could reach into the frame and grab it. Yet, there is often a surreal element to them that keeps their products feeling whimsical.

I brought this whimsy to my animation which focused on their makeup line by focusing on a tactile paper feel and airy, cloud shapes.

compositing

This animation was 450 frames and 3 minutes per frame to render. That doesn't leave a whole lot of room for re-rendering, especially on a tight deadline.

I used Nuke to brighten up some shadows that were affecting specifically the clouds in the front and the openings in the back wall. AOVs let me add depth of field, and crypomattes let me target specific objects.

Planning out the animation was one of the most challenging aspects. The camera was moving down at a constant rate, but the audience eye trace needed to follow along.

The second sketch ultimately took the viewer on a more animated journey from boxes to cologne to lipstick to perfume.
